Blooming Camellia, Chapter Five
Jae wasn’t sure what to do right then. Kieran had been taken to surgery an hour before. Dr. Santos assured him he didn’t see any reason that placing the shunt would be dangerous. After all, it was a procedure he’d done a hundred times before. Jae couldn’t help feeling anxious. He’d done it a hundred times, but not on Kieran. He paced the surgery waiting area, and after a while, he saw Varick and the others come in. They had been briefed by Lauren, he knew, so they would know what was happening.
Devan and Carmine sat down with Carmine cradling Devan against him. Devan had been crying, by the look, but with his pale complexion, the bright red splotches on his cheeks were hard to miss. Artemis, likewise, was distraught and counting on Mischka for support. Varick just looked lost. He walked over, hands in his pockets.
“Anything?”
“He’s in surgery right now. I trust Dr. Santos, so I’m sure he’ll do everything he can for Kieran.” Jae didn’t know what else to say to this man. This…partner? Suitor? He wasn’t sure really.
Varick nodded, a solemn look on his face, and he walked over to the coffee bar and pumped the carafe to get some coffee. He stood there for a moment with his back to Jae, and it made Jae curious. He drank the coffee slowly, not looking at anyone. Jae had to wonder about his relationship with Kieran more than anyone else. The others: it was different, and while they were upset, quite obviously, Varick seemed like he silently suffered.
He walked over and up a hand on his back. Varick turned his bright blue eyes on him. “He’s going to be okay,” he said.
