And that’s exclusion and inclusion, and what they mean. And why those things are important.

There’s this idea in the world that people of the majority in a population get to infiltrate the spaces of people in the minority. This occurs across many populations, most notably among races, sexualities, genders, religions, and other small groups who gather to share lived experiences.

Now, I’m not able to comment on race, as I’m white. And even though my girlfriend is a beautiful black woman, I do not, nor will I ever, expect that I am entitled to black spaces. Those are not for me, and I know that. It doesn’t bother me at all, and of course, if I am invited into that space, I will be honored, but I will not expect such from anyone, including my girlfriend.

I can comment on queer spaces.

I find, though, that cisgender and heterosexual (hereafter referred to as cishet) people feel entitled to access to our spaces. They use the excuse that it’s about “inclusion.” They say it isn’t fair that they are not invited into our spaces freely. They say they shouldn’t be excluded since we include everyone else. But if we allowed everyone into our spaces, we wouldn’t exist anymore. There would be no meaning behind the word queer. It would be meaningless because the differentiation is important.

It is a matter of experience. Cishet people can’t be put to death in certain areas of the world for being cishet. Cishet people didn’t have to fight for their right to exist without living in secret. Cishet people don’t have to defend their existence against a flood of hate in every waking moment. Cishet people don’t have to hide still today out of fear that someone will murder them for being cishet. Cishet people aren’t the victims of corrective rape. Cishet people aren’t the victims of conversion therapy. Cishet people are able to exist within the world without fear of these things. Queer people don’t have that luxury.

Being a witch is the same thing. How many Christians will try to invite themselves to esbats or sabbats? I’m not sure, because some Christians are too convinced we should be death for what we believe (ironically, just like they feel about queer people). I’m not saying being Christian is bad or anything is wrong with it. My girlfriend is also a Christian, and I respect her beliefs because they are important to her. But she also respects mine. She doesn’t expect to be included in my witchy stuff unless I ask her. I love pulling cards, but she requests I don’t do it for her. Which, again, I respect. Because she is willing to accept that difference between us, much like she accepts me as a white person.

So, what makes cishets think they deserve inclusion in spaces not meant for them? And why does it upset them so much when we don’t include them?

Well, I don’t know for sure, but I hypothesize that it has something to do with the fact that they’ve run the show for so long, they don’t know what it is like to NOT have the rest of the world cater to them. Everything is built for cishet people (read: white, Christian, able-bodied, middle class, etc). They think they are entitled to have access to everything they want, and they can’t understand that there are spaces not meant for them. They’ve never suffered just to live.

I guess I’m just ruminating on the issue right now, because after cancer (another area people try to intrude on when they’ve never had cancer) I’ve become very aware of what I spend my time thinking about and doing. I don’t have patience anymore to coddle someone. I try to educate people about things they don’t know, but there’s a point where the entitlement overrides everything I try to teach.

So, yeah, the rainbows are pretty and all that. But, like Pride itself, they represent people striving to be treated as human beings with basic rights and equal representation in the world. When you’ve never had to fight for your right to live unabused and unafraid, you don’t get to trample in spaces of those who have.

Writing Queer Magic

Why I write what I do

Beverly L. I never saw any queer people growing up, but I saw a lot of straight people and straight romances. From kissing, to nearly on screen sex, it was and still is a basic in media. And I read romance in high school, but something always felt off about it when I read it. Like, it didn’t draw me in. So, I focused instead on fantasy, science fiction, and horror where there usually weren’t those heavy romance themes. I said, “I hate romance.”

Then I found out it wasn’t romance I hated; it was straight cisgender romance. Queer romance was different when I found it. It made me think about roles in relationships and sex. It made me reconsider how love was perceived by everyone. And it made me take people’s identities into account much more.

From gay men with strict roles in the bedroom, to those who are versitile, all the way to people just living life as aseuxal, I felt like these people needed to be seen. I needed to be seen.

Feeling Seen

One of the reason to write queer stories is so I can feel seen in books. It’s for others to feel like they’re being seen as well. Whether they’re looking for a good old smutty book with lots of sex, or it they’re looking for something milder with only subplots of romance without the smut, I feel like the characters and their queerness should be front and center. Because you can’t seperate me from my queerness and still have me. It permeates every aspect of my life because it is my identity. Sure, a book doesn’t have to have romance in it. But why can’t there just be someone with a queer identity and NOT be in a sexual or romantic situation?

We Just Exist

The biggest thing is the queer people exist in the real world, so they should exist in the fictional world as well. Writing a horror novel, and one of the characters turns out to be bisexual. Yay, representation. Even if they never engage in it, maybe it comes up in conversation or they’re talking about someone being cute. There are many ways someone’s sexuality can be a part of a story that doesn’t involve sex or romance.

My Version of Queer Magic

So, I bring in my identities and other people’s as well. I vary my cast, and not a bit of it is “pandering” or “shoving it in there.” It isn’t a product of “wokeness” and I have no agenda other than to write entertaining books with a variety of queer characters. I write them firstly for myself. And secondly for those looking to see themselves as the hero.

Queer people have spent our lives being a side character, or worse, the character who dies or is the villain. Queerness is seen as abnormal, and in most places, completely non-existant. And that’s okay, but let a queer person write a book with a large cast of queer characters, and that’s unrealistic all of a sudden. Which, if you know anything about us, queer people group together and many times support each other in their lives. So, yeah, it is realistic for queer people to congregate in large groups. We need each other in a world that tries to squash us out of existence.

Make it Yourself

So, if you find yourself not in a book, write the story you want to read. Write what you want the world to see and feel. You know, when queer people asked for representation in media, we got told we should go make it ourselves. Now we are doing that. And people are surprised and offended that we’ve done that. These people told us to make stuff for ourselves, and now they’re angry that it doesn’t feature people like them. Welcome to our world where we rarely see ourselves in media.

But It Isn’t Inclusive!!

I hate the idea that if you write something for another group, the cishet people scream about it not being inclusive for them. They want to know why they aren’t the main character. They want to know why we’re excluding them and why it has to be queer. It has to be queer because that’s what I wrote it as. And no, I didn’t write it for these people. I write for queer people and real allies of queer people who consume our media (not those that fetishize us). I don’t write for the average cishet individual (and almost always they’re white, too. Hmm).

But people who make up the majority can’t stand when the focus isn’t on their group. They’ve been catered to their whole life, so when something doesn’t cater to them, they see it as discrimination. That’s not how it works. Cishet people have the world handing them everything, and then when queer people step up to create in our own world, we get accused of being discriminatory. But we can’t use that agains them, oh no. Because that’s wrong, too.

Here’s the thing: I write queer stories. And I will continue to write queer stories. People say all the time that queer people are no long oppressed and that we should stop talking about it. Well, that’s untrue. I recently entered into a conversation where I blocked several homophobic people. Why, you may ask? The topic was a fellow writer had someone post a review stating her book was sapphic (when it was a straight romance). The reason? The main character had previously dated a woman and was bisexual. Note: there was no relationship with a woman in the book. None whatsoever.

However, several people commented (or agreed with the contents) that by merely mentioning the fact she was bisexual, they wouldn’t read the book. But of course, they started with “I’m not homophobic, but...” Which that statement means I’m about to say something homophobic without fail. Their problem wasn’t with the content of the book at all, just the fact someone was bisexual instead of straight. Why would this matter if the actual romance was a straight one? It didn’t affect the story at all. Not even a lesbian kiss found, only a hug between female friends.

Yet these people believed that the mere existence of a queer identity ruined the book for them, and they would immediately stop reading. News flash, queer people exist.

Just a Preference

And of course the war cry is “I can have a preference! I don’t want to read queer romance!” Which, fine. I don’t want to read straight romance. I find it literally turns my stomach to read it. But I’m not going on every straight romance and complaining that there are straight characters in it. Preferences are fine. However, choosing to leave a book because a character of a certain type is in it and not actively shown doing the thing you don’t like...that’s not okay. And yes, that’s homophobic. Or, in the above case, biphobic.

If I’m reading a fantasy or science fiction book, and there’s no romance, but one of the characters is queer, I’m going to cheer. Because the plot is not about their identity, it’s just an aside and a part of the character. And it is absolutely phobic to put down that book because of the character being queer. It doesn’t impact the story at all, so why are people complaining?

Pushing an Agenda

And inevitably, people are accused of being “woke” and “pushing their agenda” as if in the real world, queer people don’t exist at all. Of course, if they’re the type of person who would put down a book because a character is queer, they probably don’t have any real queer friends, or they have one and use it as a shield. “See, I’m not homophobic, I am a friend with the gay person here.” Sorry, that doesn’t excuse someone from shitty actions.

Queer People Just Exist

We exist. And we can exist in fictional worlds because we exist in real life. I’m not just here to be a token queer when it’s necessary, or to suffer from the “bury your gays” trope. Not everything about queer people is sexual. Sure, most of my books have queer sex in them, but not all of them (see the Nexus Chrnicles). There mere presence of a queer person doesn’t change the plot of a book, and as writers we have every right to make characters whatever the hell we want to. So, if Suzy is asexual, bam, deal with it.

And sure, you’re free to discard a book with queer people in it. What you can’t do is try to call it a preference without facing the facts that that is phobic in some way or other.

Closing Thoughts

So, I’ve ranted for a while, and I hope you stayed with me long enough to hear me out. And if you disagree? Okay, cool. But don’t try to tell me my feelings on the subject are wrong. You can’t tell another how to feel. And it feels very gross when someone expresses something overtly phobic to a group and then tries to play it off as a preference.

The Nexus Chronicles are Here!

Walls is available for Preorder or Immediate Download!

Beverly L. Few know of it, and fewer know what it really is. One of those people is Alastair MacMillan and he knows more than most. This information has left him with one world-altering choice.

When the Nexus opened, rifts tore through the boundaries. Earth became home to creatures that could only be described as impossible, both sentient and not. They found they could not return to their home realms. From walking plants and living shadows to being of psychic energy and pure elemental states, the four other realms intersecting Earth bring horror.

These creatures invaded Earth, sending the population scrambling to protect themselves. Many lost their lives, but those who remained built walled cities and other tools to keep the creatures at bay. Allies and enemies are made among the sentient species, some of which decide to assist humans in defending themselves.

So Alastair has to make a choice. His father told him before he died that he had to choose what to do with the knowledge he had given him. He could either use it and maybe save the world, or he could ignore it and let the world die a gasping death. When he finds a reason to live, though, the choice may be easier than he imagined.

Preorder a Hard Copy Today!

Hard Copy

Download the Book Right Now Before Release!

EBook

Thanks for reading The Phoenix Codex! Not in space, on a planar level. Those realms do a complicated dance, moving and never touching. There are places where they get close, and in those places, things sometimes crossover. These are things like humans gaining psychic powers (Echo Realm), or unexplained storms that are not natural (Storm Realm). There are the Dark Realm crossovers that people whisper about, shadows that move and more. And with the Verdant Realm, strange creatures sometimes appear, and the flora grows where it shouldn’t.

That’s all well and good, right, but why is the Nexus important? Well, because humans can’t help but mess with things best left alone, and they do it in this future world.

They build a machine called a Quantum Energy Bridge Stabilizer. (QEBS). It is meant to solve the energy crisis, and they are tapping into what they think is a substrate of infinite energy. They believe they have found the end to global energy issues, and they move ahead despite desperate warnings from one man.

Finley MacMillan is a genius, and no one will doubt that. He has a doctorate in quantum physics and one in ancient civilizations/archelogy. He has evidence that the Nexus is alive, and that doing this will lead to disaster.

No one believes him, and they power on the QEBS.

The realms are pulled downward to Earth, which is the anchor point of all the realms. The Nexus tears open, leading to breaches forming from the other realms into Earth. The Nexus, which is sentient, does what it can, and seals the breaches going back to the other realms, but it cannot seal the other aspects.

But at the implosion of the QEBS, something amazing happens, and that something will save the world. And, if he can be convinced to help, Finley’s son, Alastair, may be the one to make it happen.

A Teal Journey Episode 7

Third chemo down, three to go!

Beverly L. With trying to make ends meet, and trying to continue working, I’m exhausted when I get home, so writing and working on books doesn’t take priority. I wish it did, but when you’ve got something as heavy as cancer in your mind, it eclipses most other things.

However, I’m reaching for normalcy. I’m trying to get writing back on track and see what I can work on increasing readership.

Book-wise, the biggest update is that Stolen Innocence is being revised and a new edition will replace the old one! The story stays the same, so if you already have book one, there will be minor changes to existing scenes, and maybe a few added scenes here and there. I’ve yet to decide if I’m going to do Safe Haven as well, but Safe Haven was written more recently.

The reason is that my style and my thought processes have changed over time, and I see some glaring problems that need to be smoothed out and made more realistic. The scenes work as written, but I like the changes. For example, instead of talking about Kieran doing surgery, the scene turns into watching him do the surgery. Yes, researched how to do brain surgery, of course. Probably the least suspicious of my google searches. When I had surgery they found endometriosis. It is the strongest risk factor for clear cell carcinoma. Half to three quarters of cases are associated with origins related to endometriosis. The interesting thing is I had no symptoms of endometriosis. I never had much pelvic pain, never heavy bleeding—nothing to indicate the disease.

OCCC is rare, only making up 10-12% of cases of ovarian cancer in the United Stats. There are higher rates in Asia. OCCC is also one of the most aggressive forms of ovarian cancer, however it also is most often caught in stage I or II.

There are some mutations, which you can look up on the below sites, and these mutations make OCCC act differently than other ovarian cancers.

Commonly, the symptoms of OCCC are mistaken for other things. They include pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating or distention of the abdomen, urinary frequency, and fatigue. They’re vague things that are so common and often dismissed by doctors. Pelvic pain? Cramps, you’ll be fine. Bloating? Eat better. Urinary frequency? Well, you’re getting older. Fatigue? Work on sleep hygiene.

Interestingly, other than the abdominal pain (except my ER trip), I had the other symptoms. I’ve had urinary problems for years, and actually have a bladder stimulator. I do wonder now if they are related. It’s still an issue after surgery, so I’m not certain.

Fatigue I’ve been struggling with quite a bit for a while. Interestingly, endometriosis causes it as well. And since I had that for who knows how long, it is possible that that might have triggered fatigue. Then, this year, when the fatigue got so much worse (something I was attributing to low iron), the cancer must have been influencing it. I was having days where I literally had to sleep at lunch before going back to work in order to make it through the day.

One of the things I luckily missed is that there is a higher risk of blood clots, and hypercalcemia (elevated calcium) is more common with OCCC. When we’re talking about the tumors, they are often large, unilateral (on one side), and look cystic with solid parts when imaging is done.

On my CT and ultrasound, the found the mass to have solid parts, which could either be a complex cyst or cancerous. At first, the cancer doc thought it was an infected ovary because there were no other signs of cancer, and my white cell count was so high, indicating infection. I also had inflammation. I’m not sure what caused that, and it hasn’t been clear either. They never did identify the source of the pain I had that night in the ER. All I know is they said there was “free fluid” in my abdomen along with the mass. Did a part of it rupture? Perhaps. It isn’t clear what happened, however, if it had not happened, it might have been months that allowed the cancer to continue to progress.

In my pre surgery bloodwork, my CA-125 had settled down from the high of nearly 3000 to under 200. The doc also ran a CA19-9, which also came back elevated. These two numbers mean a strong indication of OCCC.

The only way to get a definite diagnosis of OCCC is to have surgery and sent the tumor into pathology. At the time of my surgery, they went in and took out the right ovary and fallopian tube along with the tumor. It was sent to pathology while I was asleep. No matter the outcome, the doc was removing uterus and the other fallopian tube to limit risk of further cancer. When pathology determined it was cancerous, they removed the left ovary, the cervix, and the omentum. It stayed laparoscopic, so that helped out in the healing from the surgery.

And the outcome? Early‑stage OCCC can have outcomes equal to or better than high‑grade serous carcinoma, but advanced OCCC has worse outcomes due to chemotherapy resistance. Stage I has about an 85% survival rate. This means that my outlook is very good. Catching it this early, while it was contained to the ovary alone, is good for this.

Chemo will start soon, and I’m prepared to the whole thing. It’s not going to be fun; I know that. However I will be ready for it. More updates coming up as things progress.

Citations

PathologyOutlines.com. “Ovary – Clear Cell Carcinoma.”

National Cancer Institute. “Ovarian Epithelial, Fallopian Tube, and Primary Peritoneal Cancer Treatment (PDQ®) – Health Professional Version.”

American Cancer Society. “Ovarian Cancer.”

Kuroda, T. et al. “Clear cell carcinoma of the ovary: a clinical and molecular perspective.” International Journal of Clinical Oncology (2020).

Anglesio, M. et al. “Clear cell carcinoma of the ovary: molecular insights and future therapeutic directions.” Gynecologic Oncology (2011).

Sugiyama, T. et al. “Clinical characteristics of clear cell carcinoma of the ovary: a distinct histologic type with poor prognosis and resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy.” Cancer (2000).

National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD). “Ovarian Cancer.”

World Health Organization (WHO). “Female Genital Tumours – WHO Classification of Tumours, 5th Edition.”

The Journey Takes Off From here

The new year brings with it more challenges.

Beverly L. I went in hopeful, and I am still hopeful, because it isn’t over like I had hoped.

It was a cancerous tumor. I don’t know what stage or type of tumor yet, but the doctor is pretty much sure it started in the ovary and didn’t spread from somewhere else. She didn’t see any indications that it had spread anywhere else, so at this time it looks like the cancer has been fully removed.

Of course, it doesn’t end there. Generally, even after removal, chemo is necessary to kill off any remaining cancer cells. After that, they generally prescribe a maintenance drug for long-term use to prevent recurrence.

Like I said, I’m hopeful. I believe they got everything out, and removed all the other reproductive bits. I’m sore as hell, and on hydrocodone, but eventually the pain will fade. I’m not looking forward to chemo, but I’ll do what has to be done.

I want to thank everyone for their support and keeping up with me on this journey. It will be ongoing for a while. Wednesday I will be at the hospital by 7:30 AM for a 9:30 surgery. The surgery will begin with laparoscopy, and they will remove the mass (which I have named Bob, btw). Bob will be taken to pathology where it will be determined if it is cancer, precancer, or something else.

They will also be removing both fallopian tubes, my uterus, and Bob’s ovary. As long as it is not cancerous/precancerous, they will leave my other ovary to avoid me going into immediate menopause.

Currently, the theory is that Bob is an infected ovary instead of cancer, though cancer cannot be eliminated until the pathology is done (I will know as soon as I wake up what Bob is).

Bob is sitting at the top of my uterus and extends up, encompassing the ovary. It is indeterminant if Bob IS the ovary or ON the ovary.

The signs do not point to cancer, however. There is no involvement of my lymph nodes, which is common with cancer. I have an extremely high white count, which even a month after my ER visit is still over 10k. This is another sign of infection, not cancer. And there is inflammation throughout my body, which also does not occur with cancer, but does with chronic infection.

If it is an infection, my iron levels may also be an indication. I have done some research on some of t he big sites (Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, etc) and it is sometimes a result of infection to have low iron and high ferratin like I have.

My hematology bloodwork was done last week, and the iron is lower than before, and my ferritin is still high. I’m not seeing him until after the surgery (supposed to on January 5, but depends on how I’m feeling).

Bob is still an asshole, though. I spent much of Christmas playing Cards against Humanity with one of my kids, my roommate, and a friend, and laughed so hard Bob hurt. However, it was a good time.

My oldest is still struggling with the situation and worried. I find it interesting how deeply he cares because he rarely shows it. He talks to me where he doesn’t talk to other people much aside from his boyfriend who lives in Canada. He is AuDHD, like me, and he generally doesn’t show much emotion, though he feels them very intensely. I’ve tried to involve him in more stuff with me, and he’s been enjoying it a lot. He likes to go to stores with me, go out to eat, and drive around to look at things. Unlike my younger son, he likes to leave the house.

But anyway, I tried to assure him of the above, and he’s coming to my blood test/ekg appointment on Monday, and the day of surgery.

Overall, I’m encouraged, and I appreciate those of you who have reached out. The only unfortunate thing is that I will only have partial paychecks for the weeks I’m out due to some short term disability insurance I have. I’ve thought of doing an indiegogo or a gofundme, but I don’t know if anyone would be willing to buy/donate to it so I can get through the next couple months.

Day 21ish: The Change in Trajectory

A possible light

Beverly L. She gave me some good news. She doesn’t think it is cancer. It definitely has to come out, though.

Also, I’ve named the mass Bob. And Bob is an asshole. But I have an eviction date for Bob. December 31st!

They’re going to go in laparoscopically at first, remove Bob, then send him to pathology while I’m still under. They’re going to find out WHAT Bob is (she’s not 100% sure what he is, but she thinks maybe an infected ovary due to having inflammation and a 22k white count, but cancer and precancerous is still possible). So, what they’ll do is remove the fallopian tubes, the ovary Bob is attached to, Bob, of course, and my uterus. If it is cancerous or precancerous, the other ovary comes out too.

So, best case scenario, Bob is just an annoying infection or something else benign. I really appreciate everyone’s support, because even if it isn’t cancer, it’s still a big problem, and may be the source of all my symptoms.

I do also see the hematologist here to check on what the iron infusions did and talk about that. So that’s not something I’m looking forward to since the infusions didn’t seem to help much.

But anyway, a light in the darkness, as they say. :)

Day 7: Getting through

Sometimes, something small means the most.

Beverly L.
